A rare and unique Grade AA coffee of the Udaini varietal from the Hayma community in Sana'a, Yemen purchased via Direct Trade by our green coffee organization WE THE ORIGIN, directly from Yemeni coffee producer Sabcomeed.

“Yemen has become the largest humanitarian crisis in the world,” states the UN. There are 24 million people in need of aid. Yemen has exported coffee globally for almost 500 years and their economy is tied to global coffee consumption.

In this video message below, Abdulrahman Saeed from Sabcomeed shares a simple way for us to buy coffee and help the people of Yemen.

The Hayma community is a collective of small farmers, some of whom produce as little as 5 kg of coffee in an entire season. They maintain their farms at 2300 meters above sea level and combine their harvest to produce the Hayma community lot. By combining their efforts, they produced only 100 kg of coffee this season, making this an extremely rare nano-lot.

Post-harvest, the coffee was processed anaerobically (100 hours cherry anaerobic fermentation, 18 hours parchment anaerobic fermentation).

The artwork on the coffee bag was created by Humaid Mansoor (@humaidm), an artist based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

COFFEE PRODUCTION IN HAYMA

Yemeni coffee trees boast unparalleled flavour profiles due to unique heirloom varieties. The majority of Yemeni specialty coffee is grown at extremely high altitudes. Such challenging growing conditions result in stressed coffee beans that embody an unusually complex concentration of oils containing precious aromas and flavours.

The farmers in Al Hayma consider coffee a symbol of their pride. They believe that the coffee tree originated on their land and some farmers have ownership documents dating back hundreds of years.

In Yemen, the Sana’a governorate is home to the largest share of specialty coffee production in the country, both in terms of quality and quantity. The majority of this coffee production is in the 3 main coffee growing areas at elevations between 1300-2400 masl: Al Hayma Al Dakhiliya, Al Hayma Al Kharijiya, and Haraaz. These regions record rainfall of 1350mm which is higher than other areas in the governorate.
