The Northern Province is one of Rwanda’s five provinces created in the early 2000’s after a restructuring of governmental structures. It is home to Lakes Burera and Ruhondo, as well as the Virunga mountains which consists of eight major volcanoes.
This coffee is sourced from Regine Nyirabaihinde in the Gakenke disctrict of the Northern Province. Regine has Albinism, which in Rwanda results in a very difficult, dangerous and stigmatized life. She is also a widow who raised three children by herself, and two of her children have since passed. Through it all, she has continued to produce incredible coffee among the strong support network fostered by Baho Coffee, who ensures farmgate prices that are 2.5 times the national average, sometimes higher, ensuring they can work around the cap imposed by the government.
The resulting cup reminds us of chocolate, caramel & nuts.
