The Western Province is one of Rwanda’s five provinces created in the early 2000s after a restructuring of governmental structures. It is known for its mountainous terrains and hosts one of the great African lakes, Lake Kivu.
This coffee is sourced from the 1290 farmers around the Mubuga washing station in Karongi, Western Province. After selectively hand-harvesting their coffee, producers transport the cherries to the washing station. At intake, cherries are inspected and hand-sorted to remove any damaged cherries or underripes. Then, cherries are weighed and loaded into the station’s pulper. Farmers receive a payment in line with the quality and quantity delivered. After sorting, cherries are delivered to one of the washing station’s drying tables. Once here, the cherries will be turned every 30 minutes initially and covered during the hottest part of the day.
The resulting cup reminds us of plum, red grape and brown sugar.
