Kiambu is a county in the former Central Province of Kenya. It is within Greater Nairobi, which consists of four out of 47 counties in the country. It is home to the Bantu ethnic group called the Kikuyu.
This coffee is sourced from the Mandela Estate near the Gatamaiyo Forest Reserve in Kiambu County, Kenya. Unlike typical estates in Kenya, Mandela is a patchwork of small plots of land rented by a single owner and farm manager, Mr Kiongo Njuguna. Its peculiar setup is the result of many years of investment and expansion in small neighbouring tracks of land. The estate has two harvests each year, one in June - Aug and another in Oct - Dec, which are typical of the region. The ripening of the cherries is closely monitored, and when the time is right the red cherries are hand-picked and brought to the washing station down the road. They are then depulped, washed and dried on raised beds in the sun.
The resulting cup reminds us of blackberry, green grapes & brown sugar.
