The Guji zone is a southern region of Ethiopia famous for its fruit-forward coffees. The ample rainfall and steep mountainous terrain create ideal growing conditions for the vast array of producers in the region.
This coffee is sourced from the Kayon Mountain Coffee Farm in Guji. Ismael Hassen, the managing director, uses a combination of experience and scientific knowledge to cultivate the most productive and high-quality coffee possible. He plants varieties that the researchers at Jimma Agricultural Research Center (JARC) have recommended for his region. The farm’s nursery also produces seedlings for the more than 135 producers who deliver their cherries to Kayon Mountain’s wet mill.
In addition to improving coffee quality, Ismael is invested in supporting the surrounding coffee communities. He has helped build schools, offices and roads and is planning to build a bridge across the Sawana, a river that many children have to cross to get to school. The crossing is dangerous, and a new bridge would keep children safer as they pursue their education.
The resulting cup reminds us of strawberry, peach & fudge.
