Bururi is one of the eighteen provinces of Burundi. It was formerly Burundi's largest province until the communes of Burambi, Buyengero and Rumonge were transferred to the province of Rumonge when it was created in 2015.
This coffee is sourced from 801 farming families around the Kawa Zamurabawe coop in Bururi. When coffee seeds were first introduced by the Germans in the 1930s, Bururi farmers refused to comply with the obligation to grow coffee trees on their land. Instead, they resisted by pouring boiling water over the trees until the authorities believed that coffee production was impossible and unsuitable for their terroir. As a result, coffee production is relatively recent in the region, but the quality of the cup is very high, and the farmers are highly committed to their practices. This cooperative is also certified organic.
The resulting cup reminds us of kiwi, orange blossom & brown sugar.
