The Western Province is one of Rwanda’s five provinces created in the early 2000s after a restructuring of governmental structures. It is known for its mountainous terrains and hosts one of the great African lakes, Lake Kivu.
This coffee is sourced from nearly 2000 farmers who contribute their cherries to Shyira Washing Station in Nyabihu District, Western Province. The landscape in the district is beautifully lush and green, with steep slopes and rich red soils. Farms are more like backyard gardens, with an array of different crops planted in harmony, creating a wonderful sense of biodiversity.
The washing station itself is quite small, with less than 50 raised drying beds. Due to lack of space, a majority of these drying beds are aloted to washed process coffees. The drying time is usually around 40 days.
The resulting cup reminds us of brown sugar, lemon and darjeeling tea.
