The Northern Province is one of Rwanda’s five provinces created in the early 2000’s after a restructuring of governmental structures. It is home to Lakes Burera and Ruhondo, as well as the Virunga mountains which consists of eight major volcanoes.
This coffee is sourced from the Dukunde Kawa Musasa cooperative in Gakenke, Northern Province. The coop is proudly made up of 80% women. This female takeover of the production chain following the genocide that decimated the male population was a decisive decision for the viability and growth of their community. Since then, it has made a name for itself on several levels, both for the quality of its coffee and for its shade-grown and regenerative farming methods.
The resulting cup reminds us of tangerine, mango & honey.
