Coffee was introduced in Rwanda in the early 20th century. At this time, coffee was produced only with a focus on volume without any concern for quality. It is only after the country began to rebuild following the genocide that efforts by the Rwandese government were put in place to stimulate the coffee industry. Today there are 315 washing stations across the country.
This coffee comes from the the Bumbogo Washing Station in the Gahenke District, Northern Province. As of 2020, 523 farmers were on record, and about 300 tonnes of cherry was purchased collectively for processing the the station each year. To handle this volume, 105 workers are now hired in the peak season. This showcases the significant economic impact Bumbogo has in it's region. The majority of the workers at Bumbogo are women, and this mill is trying to empower the female workforce in Rwanda.
The resulting cup reminds us of pineapple, wine, and citrus.
